Smart Bathroom Technology: What West Bloomfield Homeowners Need to Know Before Buying

Person standing beside a brightly colored plumbing service van on a suburban street with houses and trees visible in the background.

Automated bidet seats, motion-activated sinks, digital showers, and whole-home freeze monitors all promise a cleaner and easier daily routine. What the packaging does not explain is the infrastructure required behind the drywall and under the subfloor to make any of it work.

Older Oakland County homes routinely present the same surprises: narrow plumbing chases, aging supply lines, and no electrical power anywhere near the water fixtures. Knowing what is back there before you buy the hardware saves a return trip and a stalled project.

This guide covers the plumbing and electrical requirements behind the most common upgrades, so you can tell which projects are a straightforward swap and which need someone to look at your setup first.

Toilets and Faucets: Power and Clearance Requirements

A smart toilet or a powered bidet seat is where most people start, and both carry prerequisites that older bathrooms usually do not meet.

Electrical Demands for Smart Toilets and Bidets

A smart toilet installation or a powered bidet seat needs an electrical connection, and bathrooms in established West Bloomfield neighborhoods often have no outlet beside the toilet at all. You need a dedicated GFCI outlet, meaning ground-fault circuit interrupter protection, positioned low and within a couple of feet of the water supply.

Running new wiring into a finished bathroom usually means opening drywall unless you have open basement access directly below. That is electrical work and needs a licensed electrician, so it is worth pricing and scheduling that piece before the fixture arrives.

If you are adding a bidet seat rather than an integrated unit, check the bowl shape first. Elongated bowls accept most electronic seats. Compact round bowls frequently do not leave enough deck space for the motorized housing.

Plumbing Considerations for Bidet Installation

Most powered bidets draw cold water from the existing toilet shutoff valve and heat it internally, which means that valve and supply line have to be sound.

If the shutoff has not been turned in years, there is a fair chance it will leak or fail to seat once you disturb it to attach the bidet’s brass diverter tee. Replacing a corroded valve with a modern quarter-turn ball valve is worth doing before the bidet goes on, not after. Our plumbing repair work covers that.

Adding a Touchless Bathroom Faucet

Touchless faucets use infrared sensors to keep handles clean and cut water waste. They run on either a hidden battery pack or an under-counter transformer.

      • Battery-powered models fit standard sink drillings and need no rewiring, which makes them a practical retrofit in older homes.

      • Hardwired models eliminate battery changes but require an unswitched outlet inside the vanity cabinet.

      • Solenoid clearance is the detail people miss. The sensor signals a motorized mixing box under the sink, and that box competes for space with your drain trap and supply hoses. Measure the cabinet before buying.

Smart Shower Systems: Valves, Cavity Depth, and Water Pressure

A digital shower replaces manual handles with electronic controls for temperature, flow, and multiple spray outlets. It is rarely a cosmetic swap.

What Sits Inside the Shower Wall

A traditional shower uses one mechanical mixing cartridge in the wall. A digital shower uses an electronic mixing valve that needs hot and cold supply lines, a data cable, and constant power, and that valve is considerably larger than a standard brass rough-in.

That means planning an accessible location for the valve box, whether that is a nearby linen closet, an access panel in the adjoining room, or the basement below. If the shower sits on an exterior wall, insulating around the valve cavity matters, because a frozen or burst line there takes the electronics with it.

Supply Line Sizing and Water Pressure

Many digital showers let you run an overhead rain head, body sprays, and a handheld wand at the same time. Plenty of Oakland County homes are plumbed in half-inch copper, which cannot deliver the volume three outlets need at once. Run all three, and the pressure drops to a trickle.

Three-quarter-inch dedicated supply lines solve it. Before you commit to a configuration, it is worth having someone test your static water pressure and pipe sizing against the gallons per minute the fixture actually requires.

Whole-Home Protection: Smart Leak Detectors and Automatic Shutoff Valves

Smart showers and toilets add daily comfort. A smart leak detector paired with an automatic shutoff valve does something different: it protects the house.

    Defending Against Michigan Freeze Events

Subzero cold snaps drop temperatures inside crawlspaces, unheated basements, and exterior wall cavities. A pipe that splits while the house is empty over a holiday can do enormous damage before anyone notices.

A smart shutoff valve installs on the main incoming water line and continuously reads flow rate, pressure, and pipe temperature. When it detects abnormal continuous flow or the sudden pressure drop that signals a burst, it closes the main within seconds and sends an alert to your phone. That is often the difference between a repairable leak and a gutted first floor.

    Retrofitting a Main Water Line

Installing one means cutting into the main domestic line just after the water meter and pressure-reducing valve. In older West Bloomfield homes, that area is often in a tight utility closet or behind a finished basement wall.

A few things determine whether it is straightforward:

        • The incoming pipe material has to be identified first, whether copper, PEX, or older galvanized steel.

        • The valve body needs adequate straight pipe on both sides for accurate ultrasonic flow measurement.

        • A standard outlet needs to be within reach, or you need a battery backup so the valve still closes during the winter storm outage that caused the problem.

Because this device sits on the main line at the house’s highest-pressure point, the cut and valve alignment are worth having a plumber handle.

      Planning Your Bathroom Upgrades Wisely

Smart bathroom technology can make a house more comfortable and more resilient against a plumbing failure. The projects that go smoothly are the ones where somebody checked what was behind the wall first.

Look for a nearby GFCI outlet, measure the clearance under the sink, and find out what size your supply lines are. Battery-operated faucets and simple bidet seats usually work with what you already have. Multi-head digital showers and whole-house shutoff valves need mechanical changes that are much easier to plan than to discover mid-installation.
